Center for Grieving Children, Teens and Families
(Center for Grieving Children, Teens and Families)
The Center for Grieving Children (The Center) programs are based on a peer support group model to help children, teens, young adults, and their parents/guardians cope and grow through their grief experience. Research and experience shows that our philosophy of peer support, adult mentors, and creative modalities of play and expression work best for grieving children. The Center's peer support groups are trauma informed and designed to decrease the likelihood of long term psychological issues, reduce social isolation, and reduce trauma symptoms associated with violent death. We offer Center-based groups in four locations throughout the city of Philadelphia: East Falls, West Philadelphia, Lower Northeast, and South Philadelphia. A support group0 for adult caregivers is held while the children are in their group. The Center also provides Community-based grief groups for students at schools and organizations across the city. The Center provided 64 grief supp0ort groups in 50 schools during 2015-2016 program year. The Center also provides Post-Crisis interventions for schools and community organizations after the death of a community membe4r as well as training and development for professionals working with grieving youth. The Center's services directly supported over 5,000 grieving you across Philadelphia last program year alone.
